Colorado Goose Hunting | Off Season

What to do, what to do, what to do??? When the Colorado goose hunting season comes to an end what do you end up doing during this off season? Fish? How about Turkey Hunt? Maybe just dream about the next goose hunt?

Our favorite time of the year is being on the Northern Front Range hunting geese and when the season ends we like to keep up on all the opportunities Colorado has to offer year round. From fishing for the bountiful trout and delicious walleye to turkey hunting and honing in our skills on the shooting range.

Colorado Goose Hunting | Next Season

For the most part many goose hunters will be biting their their nails just in the anticipation of the next time a sky pig is dropping feet and and landing on your lid or even just the next Colorado hunting adventure. So get out to the range and make sure you can hit the broad side of a barn and hopefully get your limit in one rally. Happy Colorado Goose Hunting To Everyone!

27 lb lobster

The 40-inch (one-meter) male crustacean, about the size of a 3-year-old child, was freed in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, said Elaine Jones, education director for the state’s Department of Marine Resources.

“All the weight is in the claws,” Jones said. “It would break your arm.”

The lobster was caught near the seaside village of Cushing and brought to the Maine State Aquarium in West Boothbay. The state restricts fishermen from keeping lobsters that measure more than 5 inches (1.27 cm) from the eye to the start of the tail.

Because he became acclimated to the water near the aquarium, the lobster was released in West Boothbay rather than where he was caught.

Scientists are unable to accurately estimate the age of lobsters of this size, said Jones.

The marine lab has no record of a larger lobster being caught in the state, she said. The world’s largest recorded lobster was a 44-pounder (20-kg) caught off Nova Scotia in 1977, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Maine lobstermen hauled in a record 100 million pounds (45.4 tonnes) of lobsters last year, due in part to overfishing of predators such as haddock, cod and monkfish.

Colorado Goose Hunting

On this Colorado goose hunting adventure the geese seriously just kept pouring into the decoy spread. We can all take a guess as to how many actually finished but the average consensus was at about five thousand Canadian geese and at least a few handfuls of snow geese and blue geese.

One of the prettiest views that will get burned into any waterfowl hunters mind is thousands of cupped up geese and that’s exactly what happened on this Colorado hunt. It was literally like a tornado of geese!

Yeah if you’ve seen the price tag on these bad boys you probably think “ah, who needs heated electric gloves” well why don’t you sit down and write down all the times your hands got cold and wet this waterfowl season and think twice about scoffing at these must have gloves.  Sure the price is high but so is the quality! I’ve worn these gloves on over 15 different goose and duck hunting trips on both land and water and my hands have yet to be cold or wet.

Hunting is all about enjoying yourself and if you’re cold or wet it becomes a nightmare especially when it comes to your hands or feet. Oh and I’m sure you’re probably thinking that Columbia sent us these gloves in exchange fort this review but that’s not the case. I admittedly spent $400 on these gloves because I enjoy hunting,  not being miserable. I’ve put these gloves through a pretty hard test including completely submerging them in ice cold water picking up duck decoys and unloading hundreds of decoys from the goose trailer and about 15 hunts later they are still in excellent shape. If there’s one thing I double check to make sure I have before going hunting it’s these gloves.

Columbia also offers a heated wader jacket and boots but I’m going to hold off until they can find a way to bring the prices down. They are asking $1200 for the jacket and $400 for the boots but those are items I will have to do without for now. Good luck and happy hunting!

Today Colorado Goose Hunting we put 6 Sky Pigs on Ice!!!

Geese started getting up around 9 and steadily progressed for about an hour and a single gave it up real hard and gave Bear a 12 yr old lab a good run around the decoys! Around 1130 another single came right in and landed in between 2 goose decoys and this time stayed on ice for Bear. The last pass was a 4 pack that circled twice and all dropped right next to each other for another retrieve for this already veteran hunting dog!

All in all the day was fairly slow but there was no lack of geese flying everywhere but mainly in large groups of 60 plus where a single or double would come down for a closer look but would not commit. The majority of the birds came back from feeding after shooting time so it was a long day but always a great day Colorado Goose Hunting!!!

Hunting Her Way To The Top

Category: Deer Hunting   |   Comments: 0

Jacquelyn Gross from Silt, CO is a Finalist in National ‘Huntress’ Competition

Jacquelyn Gross may be the walking definition of an Extreme Huntress. See her story below published in the Citizens Telegram

On a recent hunting expedition, Gross hiked the backcountry for three weeks hunting for deer. She lost nine pounds.

It wasn’t until the end of her trip, she came face to face with her target. Encompassed in camouflage and hiding in bushes, the buck didn’t see Gross — only another pair eyes in the early morning fog. “It was like I was in the deer’s world,” Gross said. “That moment was incredible, to stare another species straight in the eyes is something you don’t forget.” There are people who hunt for food, fun, sport or even for trophies, but Gross isn’t your average hunter. She’s a pint-sized Southern girl who migrated to the Colorado Rockies for one reason and one reason only — bigger game to hunt.

She grew up sitting in the duck blinds and picking up spent shotgun shells of her brothers in the Louisiana wetlands, and had an early introduction into the patience and skill hunting demands. Spending as much time outside as she was allowed, Gross quickly learned that girls could be just as good of a shot as the boys. For Gross, hunting is about much more than trophies, it’s a lifestyle. “Growing up, we lived in the country,” Gross said. “So my mom cooked everything we hunted because it was food on the table for us. So for me, hunting is about providing for your family.” And she’s hunted ever since.

Many years and hunting trips later, Gross is being recognized for her passion for being a woman hunter. Gross wrote an essay describing what makes her the most extreme huntress in North America to a panel of judges and is now a finalist in the annual Tahoe Film 2012 Extreme Huntress competition.

The contest is run by Tahoe Films, a film company who films reality television shows in the traditions of the American sportsman — hunting, fishing and various survival shows. Contestants for the contest were asked to write a 500 word essay detailing why they think they are the most “extreme huntress.” Essays are read by the public who also decide the final winner by voting for their favorite essay. The winner will be named as the “Extreme Huntress” for 2012 and along with the all-expense paid hunting trip to Zimbabwe.

If she wins, Gross gets an all-expense expedition to the Omay Concession in Zimbabwe, Africa to hunt Cape buffalo with Martin Pieters Safaris. The hunt will be filmed for an episode of “Eye of the Hunter” that will air this summer on NBC Sports.

Her answer detailing the quiet of the wilderness, the wind in the trees and the special relationship between a hunter and animal wowed the judges. For Gross, the competition is less about the glitz, glamour and money of the televised hunting industry and is more about a lifestyle she encompasses. Winning is completely dependent on public votes through Tahoe Film’s website and Gross is reaching out to family, friends and coworkers, encouraging them to vote for her.

While Gross’s fellow huntress finalists may be well versed in the commercialized and monetary celebrity hunting world, Gross does things on her own. “Hunting, of course, is extremely expensive,” Gross said. “I guess I’m kind of a do-it-yourself hunter. I buy all of the equipment myself and I pay my own way for everything, the outfits, the weapons, this way, I think it helps me really appreciate everything.”

As for being a woman in the male dominated big-game hunting field, Gross says she hopes she’s at least proving that women are just as good hunters as men. “For men, I think size matters,” she said. “Women are a bit more patient and enjoy the experience more, when a lot of men are just after the biggest animal they can find.”

Enjoying the experience is a central aspect in Gross’s hunting philosophy and it’s a philosophy she hopes carries her to winning first place and eventually to Zimbabwe. Although most would jump at chance for an all-expense trip paid to Africa, for Gross, she’s more interested in the chance to see a different species.

“Winning this competition would mean the world to me,” Gross said. “It would provide an opportunity that I would never otherwise have, a chance to see a new species and completely different part of the world.”
